TYPEFACES DESIGN INFO

The Cholla™ typeface family was designed in 1998-99 and named after a species of cactus indigenous to the Mojave Desert. Cholla™ was originally developed for Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. The variety of the different weights was needed to echo the school's nine departments, yet together the fonts had to produce a unified feel. Stylistically the different cuts have slightly different personalities with diverse ideas applied. The Bold weight isn't the Regular with weight gain, but has letterforms with their own peculiar details. All weights share a tapered curve marked out in the lowercase b's left top and bottom of the bowl, as their unifying detail.

Cholla™ received also an award for excellence in type design from the Type Directors Club of New York in 2000.

Cholla™ is distributed by the type foundry Emigre.
